About Jagrikshala
Jagrikshala is YOGI's platform for active citizenship. The name joins jagrik, from jagrut nagrik, the aware and awakened citizen, with shala, a place of learning. It is a school of citizenship: a space where young people learn to understand, engage with, and strengthen the governance of their own cities.
Jagrikshala is a broad and evolving platform rather than a single course. It brings together civic education, active engagement with public institutions, and structured spaces for young people to deliberate, contribute, and act on the life of their city. It is currently most active in Jalgaon, where it operates in partnership with the Jalgaon City Municipal Corporation.

Why It Matters
Strong cities are built not by administration alone, but by an active, informed citizenry that participates in how they are governed. Yet young people, the largest stakeholders in a city's future, are rarely equipped to engage with local government, and rarely invited to. The result is a widening distance between citizens and the institutions meant to serve them.
Jagrikshala closes that distance. Working in the spirit of the 74th Constitutional Amendment, which envisions participatory urban governance, it builds the civic capacity of young people and creates practical channels through which they can contribute to more accountable, transparent, and responsive local government. For a city, this means better feedback, greater trust, and a pipeline of engaged young citizens; for young people, it means a genuine stake in shaping where they live.

What began as a pilot in civic learning has grown into a broader platform for active citizenship.

The programme has been developed within the Changelooms ecosystem and in collaboration with Aapan Foundation, and connects with national platforms for youth civic engagement, including MY Bharat, Government of India. It welcomes partnerships with municipal bodies, funders, and institutions who share its vision of participatory, accountable cities.
